County Line Raceway
April 28 Race Recap
With a cloudy, overcast sky lingering over County Line Raceway, fans filled the stands and driver's filled the pits in anticipation of a full night of heavy racing action. On the schedule for tonight, the Nashville Feed Super Stock 4's, the ARCO Restoration Pure Stock 4's, P.L. Woodard Pure Stock V8's, Barnes Equipment Late Models & DRU Inc Open Wheel Modifieds. With 86 cars signed in, track staff eagerly anticipated how the new surface would fair with the high horsepower the Late Models & Open Wheel Modifieds would turn.Â
After the Nashville Feed Super Stock 4's took to the track for their qualifying session, the Barnes Equipment Late Models lined up for a hot lap session on the new surface. Unfortunately, the track would not handle the high horsepower these cars were putting out. After an impromptu driver's meeting with promoters Brenda Holcombe and James Upchurch, it was decided to bring out the heavy equipment to do some grading to the track. Allen Owens, owner of Owens Construction, climbed aboard the grader to literally dig up the track in turns 3 & 4. Jimmy Holcombe jumped on the bulldozer while Edward Upchurch climbed on the track pulling the packer graciously provided by Barnes Equipment, trying to get the track ready for racing. After a lengthy delay, some line dancing on the front stretch and a lot of work on the track, a decision was made. Track promoters Brenda Holcombe & James Upchurch said that "unfortunately, due to track conditions, it is not going to be feasible to get a full show in. Therefore the decision has been made to attempt to get the Modified portion of the show in with Open Practice for the other divisions. Armbands will be honored next weekend in place of tonight's events. We are sorry things did not work in our favor, however we will do everything possible to get the track back in the condition everyone is accustom to at CLR. Thanks for everyone who has bared with us though this matter."Starting on the pole, Russell Erwin side by side with Chris Parker as they took the green flag. Charging hard down into turn 1, Kyle Strickler would make it a 3 wide battle for the lead as they came out of turn 2! All the way down the back stretch these guys would race hard for that top spot, but it would be Russell Erwin leading at the line.Strickler would challenge Erwin taking the lead briefly, but Erwin would maintain the lead. Strickler would get around Erwin as they began to catch lap traffic on lap 9. Nick Hoffman would challenge Erwin for 2nd spot but could not complete the pass. As these 2 battled it out, Strickler continued to lap cars as Erwin and Hoffman battled it out for 3rd spot. Lap 10 would see Erwin pop the wall in turn 1 causing him to lose a spot but able to keep his momentum gong and maintain the third spot. With only 5 cars on the lead lap, Strickler continued to lap cars at an amazing rate. With 22 laps complete, Kyle Strickler continued to lead Nick Hoffman, Russell Erwin, Chris Parker & Duke Layton. Roger Lucas would bring out the first caution with a spin in turn 4. With a green, white, checker on the line, Strickler lead the field to the green flag. Strickler would lead the remaining 3 laps of this 25 lap event. Strickler would be followed by Nick Hoffman, Chris Parker, Russell Erwin and Mike McKinney.
