Erwin Takes Home Ultimate Series Win
After a night of very heavy rain, everyone was ready for the Road to Jamaica 50 lap featuring the Ultimate Super Late Models. With 5 divisions running, including the Super Stock 4's, Pure Stock 4's, PL Woodard Pure Stock V8's, the ARCO Restoration Thunder & Lightning the Ultimate Super Late Models were the icing on the cake for a full night of racing. With a packed pit area & packed grandstands, we were all ready to get this night of action packed racing under way!
Our first feature of the night, the Super Stock 4 division with Glenn Bottoms & James Manning leading the field to green. James Manning jumped out in front of the field followed by Glenn Bottoms, Austin Holcombe, Eric Hill & John Proctor. Bottoms slipped back a few spots as Austin Holcombe got around Manning for the lead. This caution free race would see Austin Holcombe lead Eric Hill, James Manning, James Bailey and Jason Horne. Hill slipped over in turn 4 allowing Manning and Bailey to pass him as the laps wound down. Coming to the checkers it would be Austin Holcombe, James Manning, James Bailey, Jason Horne & Eric Hill. This was Austin's first win of 2014.
Up next, the PL Woodard Pure Stock V8 division. Wade Ferrell & Willie Schwann would drag race down the front stretch barreling into turn 1 with Wade Ferrell coming out in front of the field. Kevin Beard would challenge Ferrell for the top spot, taking it relegating Ferrell to 2nd. Amanda Liles & Gary Whitley were bumper to bumper as Liles held onto 3rd, and Whitley wanting it badly. Liles would suffer some kind of issue that would slow her considerably bringing out the caution with 4 to go. Back green with Beard leading Ferrell, Whitley, Schwann & Mike Wall. The top 3 were close enough to cover with a beach towel folks! With 2 to go, Mike Wall fell back as Paul Peele moved up into the top 5. At the checkers, it would be Kevin Beard bringing home his first win of 2014. Wade Ferrell, Gary Whitley, Willie Schwann & Paul Peele.
The always exciting ARCO Restoration Thunder & Lightning division lined up on the backstretch with last week's winner Cy Nelms, Jr. on the pole, with Lane Proctor on the outside. Lane Proctor would jump out in front of Nelms, Jr. bringing Matthew Bissette with him. Skeeter Liles held on to the 4th spot while Scott Baines rounded out the top 5. Caution would come out on lap 5 for a spin at the tail of the field. Back green quickly with Proctor leading Bissette, Nelms, Jr., Skeeter Liles & Scott Baines. Baines would bring out the caution with a spin over out of turn 2. Green flag with Proctor leading Bissette, Nelms, Jr., Skeeter Liles & Luke Owens. Huge crash over in turn 2 when Britches Liles spun collecting CJ Cascell, Mark McDaniels & Scott Baines. After a lengthy red flag, we were back racing with Proctor continuing to lead Bissette, Nelms, Jr., Skeeter Liles & Luke Owens. The leader breaks coming out of turn 4 at the white flag allowing Cy Nelms, Jr. to shoot around him & Matthew Bissette to take the lead! Cy Nelms, Jr. would bring home the win followed by Matthew Bissette, Skeeter Liles, Luke Owens & Mark Boykin.
Our final regular event of the night, the Pure Stock 4 cylinder division lined up with Gary Dillon & Michael Webb on the front row. Dillon quickly took command of this race followed by Michael Webb, Brent Atkinson, David Haggans & Robby Causby. With Gary Dillon setting a fast pace, the rest of the field jockeyed for position, trying to move up through the field. As the laps wound down, Dillon continued to dominate, followed by Michael Webb, Brent Atkinson, David Haggans & Robby Causby. When the checkers fell, it would be Gary Dillon, Michael Webb, Brent Atkinson, David Haggans & Robby Causby.
With a bright yellow moon rising over turn 4, the Ultimate Super Late Models lined up with Chris Ferguson on the pole. During qualifying, Chris laid down a new track record with a time of 13.638!! That's bad fast folks, just..bad fast!! Brandon Overton would be on the outside. With 24 super late models lined up for the start, this was sure to be a tremendous race! Ferguson jumped out to a quick lead followed close by Russell Erwin, Brandon Overton, Walker Arthur & Casey Roberts. The caution would come out early for Jeff Smith who slowed out of turn 4. After a quick pit stop, Smith was back out on the track & we were ready to go back green flag racing. Chris Ferguson leads this Delaware Double File restart followed by Russell Erwin, Brandon Overton, Walker Arthur & Casey Roberts. Chris Ferguson held about a 3 car length lead over Russell Erwin as they quickly closed the gap on the tail of the field. As we approached lap 20, Russell Erwin was all over Chris Ferguson. With cars bunching up in front of the leaders, Erwin was there to make the move on the 00 of Jeff Smith who was at the tail of the field. Using Smith, Erwin was able to shoot around both Smith & Ferguson to take the lead. Lap 30 would see Russell Erwin lead Chris Ferguson, Overton, Roberts & Arthur. With a couple of car lengths between him & Ferguson, Erwin continued to pace the field. Lap 43 would see trouble in turn 3 for Walker Arthur as he suffered a right rear flat.
